"Love is not the icing on the cake of life. It's a basic primary need, like oxygen or water. Once we accept that, we can move on to figuring out how to actually nurture it."

Gottman Method Couples Counselling on the Gold Coast

Plus Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) - two evidence-based approaches, one goal

At Hopeful Counselling, we specialise in the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) - the two most researched, evidence-based approaches in couples therapy today. Not sure which is right for you? That's completely normal. We'll talk through your situation in your first session and tailor the approach to what you and your partner need.

Whether you're new to Gottman Method couples counselling or you've specifically sought us out for it, our goal is the same: help you build the relationship you actually want - with more connection, more understanding, and less conflict.

What is the Gottman Method?

The Gottman Method was developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, based on decades of research into what makes relationships succeed - and what causes them to break down. It's one of the most widely respected, evidence-based approaches in couples therapy worldwide.

In Gottman Method couples counselling, we use structured assessment tools and targeted interventions to help you:

  • Communicate more effectively - express needs and concerns without escalating conflict

  • Rebuild intimacy - reconnect emotionally and physically

  • Navigate conflict constructively - using the "Sound Relationship House" framework, a research-backed model of what healthy relationships are built on

  • Strengthen friendship - the foundation the Gottmans found underpins every lasting relationship

  • Create shared meaning - build a sense of purpose and connection as a couple

This isn't guesswork - it's a structured, research-backed process that identifies exactly what's working in your relationship and what needs attention.

What is Emotionally Focussed Therapy (EFT)?

EFT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and is grounded in attachment theory - the idea that we're wired to need secure emotional bonds with our partner. EFT helps couples understand and shift the negative patterns that create distance, so you can build a more secure, connected relationship.

EFT typically moves through three stages:

  1. De-escalation - breaking the negative cycle that keeps you stuck

  2. Restructuring - building new, safer patterns of emotional connection

  3. Consolidation - reinforcing those patterns so they last

Through empathy, validation, and structured support, EFT helps couples move from feeling reactive and disconnected to feeling like a secure team again.
